Why is protein important?
Proteins are the body’s main source of nitrogen, essential for growth and development. They are responsible for the building and repair of all your cells, muscle, tissue, skin and the blood. They are essential for body maintenance, digestion, immune function, movement, energy production, detoxification, weight control and even mood. Insufficient protein leads to muscle wasting and damage to organs. Even mild protein deficiency can cause you hair loss, skin dryness, water retention, bloating and depression. Serious depletion can be life threatening.
I recently (at last) found a protein supplement that I thought was entirely suitable for my needs. This was Vital (previously “Phyto”) protein. I bought a 500 gram container to try it. I cannot take sugar or MSG. However I have since learned that Glutamic Acid is a form of MSG and there is a lot of it in Vital Protein. Can you confirm that this is correct?
Glutamic acid has nothing to do with MSG (mono sodium glutamate). It is not a form of MSG.  Glutamic acid is just an amino acid which is a component of all proteins. While the Glutamate for is part of the MSG compound there are no common properties whatsoever.
Does your pea protein contain any MSG, or is MSG created upon manufacturing/processing the product? Is the protein hydrolysed?
There is no MSG either in the product or created in the protein isolation process. The protein is isolated through a hot water ‘curtain’ which also neutralizes an enzyme (trypsin inhibitor) which prevents humans absorbing essential amino acids present in legumes. This process is not hydrolisation as such however.
